The following is a list of Canadian, American and International Universities that offer Master's Degree programs in the field of English language education.  Many of these degree programs may be completed partly or entirely online and offer options for part-time or full-time study.

Anaheim University
Description:

The MA TESOL program at Anaheim University in Anaheim, California is designed to be completed in 2 years while working full-time. There are online live webinars as well as an expectation to attend two 4-day course sessions on campus. Key TESOL teachers such as Ken Beatty (contributor to the LEAP series) and Brian Tomlinson provide training at these sessions.

Brock University
Description:

Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario offers a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (TESL).  There are two program options: a 12-month Direct Entry Program and a 14-month Bridged Entry Program especially for students for whom English is a subsequent language. The Bridged Entry Program includes a non-credit summer bridging segment as well as academic writing mentoring throughout the academic year.

Carlton University
Description:

The M.A. in Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies at Carlton University in Ottawa, Ontario may be completed on a part-time or full-time basis with courses offered throughout the year.

Charles Sturt University
Description:

Charles Sturt University has a variety of campuses, including Bathurst, Canberra, and Albury-Wodonga as well as Burlington, Ontario.  The MA TESOL program may be completed online in two years (part-time).

Concordia University
Description:

The M.A. in Applied Linguistics program at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec includes a range of research interests including: language learning by children and adults in different contexts, learner characteristics, language systems and their development over time, pedagogical practices and the consequences of language learning. The minimum residence is one-year (3 terms) full-time or the equivalent in part-time study.

Hamline University
Description:

The M.A in TESOL at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is a fully online program that can be completed in 5 to 6 terms. Up to 6 credits of graduate work can be transferred from another educational institution. The program consists of required and elective courses in language and teaching, with a K-12 teaching specialization possible.

McGill University
Description:

McGill University in Montreal, Quebec has several options for their Master of Arts in Second Language Education - two programs requiring a thesis and one program not requiring a thesis.  The M.A. in Second Language Education is research oriented. Half of the program is course work and the other is spent on thesis research. The M.A. in Second Language Education: Gender and Women’s studies is research oriented as well. However, the research is topically centred on the issues of gender and women’s studies. The M.A. in Second Language Education can also be a non-thesis program suitable for practitioners interested in professional development with a theoretical orientation.

McGill University also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning: English or French as a second language.  This M.A. in Teaching and Learning is a 60-credit, post-graduate degree leading to teacher certification. This program is comprised of 45 credits of coursework, coupled with 15 credits of internship. Upon completion, students are recommended to the MEESR for certification to teach English or French as a Second Language.

Memorial University
Description:

The Master of Education program at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland is designed to prepare candidates to function in a variety of roles in informal and formal post-secondary learning environments (including academic, technical, professional, adult education, and student services/development). There are five areas of specialization: 1) educational leadership studies, 2) curriculum, teaching, and learning studies, 3) post-secondary studies, 4) counselling psychology, and 5) information technology.

Murray State University
Description:

The MA TESOL program at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky may be completed in 24-36 months online with September, January and May start dates.

School for International Training
Description:

The M.A. in TESOL from SIT in Brattleboro, Vermont, is a blended learning program. Students complete the majority of coursework online while staying in their current jobs and communities, and go to the Vermont campus for three weeks each summer for intensive face-to-face sessions. This is a proven, world-leading M.A. program that merges theory, reflection and practice.
